10. Karakoram Highway (Pakistan to China)
Occasionally considered the Eighth Wonder of the World, because it was constructed as high as 15,000 feet above sea level and under very rough conditions, construction on the Karakoram Highway started in 1966 and was completed in 1979, though it wasn’t available to the public before 1986. This dangerous street follows the Silk Road covers more than 1,300 kilometers and in some places. Cutting the very mountainous region in the world, the Karakoram Highway is fraught with risks: horrible storms, landslides, avalanches, flood, snow drifts drivers, herds of animals, precipitous cliffs and rock falls. Interestingly, the road meanders though the Hunza Valley, the scene of James Hilton’s Lost Horizon, a book about the mythical Shangri-La, a harmonious location where people live for centuries.
